Overall

Many reports focus on events over time, which is why you’ll often find the time or date as the bottom axis on your charts.

But what if your chart is already using both axes, such as when you’ve got equipment that is laid out in a grid or spread out over a surface or area?

Using video is an excellent way to show changes over time, since you are literally doing just that – showing the time axis of your report over time.

Example

In this example, we have a large grid of sensors reading temperatures. In all, our Coke Oven example has 10 ‘walls’ spread left-to-right across the page, with 32 temperature sensors each that are spread top-to-bottom.

Each wall heats and cools over time, but they are all at different stages in the heating and cooling cycle. This means that there can be dramatic changes over time.

By re-playing several snapshots evenly spaced across the day into a video file, we’ve got a moving, understandable report that can be played back on any modern device.

This report can be found in our coke oven demo site.
